About Dr. Allan van Zyl

Dr. Allan van Zyl has an impressive reputation as an orthopaedic surgeon and has achieved a number of accolades and awards throughout his career. He serves as a member of the South African Medical Association, South African Orthopaedic Association, South African Arthroplasty Society, an AO Alumni member and a member of the American Hip and Knee Society.

Dr. Allan van Zyl is an experienced and highly sought after orthopaedic surgeon with over 30 years’ experience in joint replacement. He has performed over 7800 hip and knee replacement surgeries throughout his career and presented multiple presentations on both knee and hip replacement surgeries.

Following his esteemed position as Head of Joint Replacement at National Hospital, Dr. van Zyl has been operating his private practice at Mediclinic, Bloemfontein since 1991. As a specialist in the treatment of arthritis of the hip and knee, Dr. Allan van Zyl has completed numerous studies in the field of replacement surgery and continues to push boundaries by using innovative technology to improve his technique and speed up recovery for patients.

Robotic Knee Replacement

Total Hip Replacement

Hip replacement surgery or total hip replacement is conducted when your hips have been damaged by arthritis, fractures or in the instance where patients experience pain and difficulty with common movements such as walking or getting out of a chair. Hip replacement surgery is historically one of the most successful and effective operations of all time, improving mobility, relieving pain, increasing motion and improving the overall quality of everyday life.

Total Knee Replacement

One of the most common reasons for total knee replacement surgery is osteoarthritis. Symptoms include difficulty climbing stairs, walking or simply moving in and out of a seated position. Orthodoc specialises in knee replacement surgery, or arthroplasty, helping patients with pain relief and restoration of severe knee anomalies and injuries. A number of surgical techniques and replacement prostheses can be used depending on a patient’s age, weight and overall health.

Arthroscopic Surgery

An arthroscopy refers to the surgical procedure used by an orthopaedic surgeon to assess, diagnose and treat deterioration or inflammation of joints. The outpatient surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and is generally non-invasive with minimal risks and postoperative complications. While Orthodoc specialises in knee and hip replacement surgery, we can perform surgery on other joints such as shoulders, elbows, ankles and wrists.

Femoral Osteoplasty

The surgical alteration or reshaping of your femur (thigh bone). Femoral Osteoplasty is performed on patients with abnormal femoral heads which results in a medical condition called femoroacetabular impingement (FAI).

ACL Reconstruction

Anterior cruciate ligament construction is a surgical tissue graft replacement of the ACL located in the knee to restore function. The procedure involves removing the torn ligament from the knee or preserving the ligament before reconstruction through an arthroscopic procedure.
